World Toilet Day: Prosecute Households Without Toilets -Prof. Wiafe Debrah

The Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, Somanya, Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah, has called for stringent national regulations to ensure access to toilets in all spaces.

He said with the introduction of new toilet facility module, it must be required of every household to have access to a simple place of convenience.

“It is not expensive for every household to have a toilet facility. The new module is cheaper and government must start the prosecution of individuals without a facility in their household,” he said.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Aluta FM’s Anopa Koko Morning Show with Agyaba Kwaku, Prof. Debrah stressed that the absence of proper toilet facilities remains one of the country’s persistent environmental and public health challenges.

“It is very strange that we give lesser attention to having a hygienic and proper toilet facility,” he said.

Prof. Debrah argued that every household, company, and public space must be mandated by law to provide a toilet facility.

According to him, “any institution or household without a toilet should be made to face the law”, emphasizing that toilet access is not a luxury but a basic human necessity.

Prof. Debrah further suggested that all buildings, especially public ones, should clearly display male and female restroom symbols, allowing the public to easily identify where to go without having to ask for directions during a nature call.

“Prioritizing toilet availability is crucial for public health, environmental protection, and human dignity, and Ghana must take bold steps to ensure universal access,” he added
