Lawyer Defends Chief Justice Nominee Over 70-Year Sentence for Ataa Ayi

A Private Legal Practitioner, Kwasi Kwaku Boadu, Esq., has added his voice to the ongoing social media debate surrounding Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s comments about sentencing notorious armed robber Ataa Ayi to 70 years in prison.

The nominee, during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, 2025, defended the lengthy sentence as necessary for justice and public safety.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie explained that while judges adhere to sentencing guidelines, certain crimes warrant harsher punishment. “In my youthful days, I gave somebody 70 years — Ataa Ayi,” he said. “If Ataa Ayi was given 30 years and came back, my family would be the first he would attack. So, by the time he comes back after 70 years, I’ll be dead and gone.”

His comments have since sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporting his reasoning and others accusing him of bias.

Responding to the backlash on the Anopa Koko Morning Show on Aluta FM with Agyaba Kwaku, Lawyer Boadu defended the judge, stating that his remarks had been taken out of context.

According to him, tough but fair sentencing serves as a deterrent to others, especially when offenders are viewed as public figures or role models.

“Such judgments remind everyone that the law applies equally to all,” he said.
